Corrections Officer David Weaver succumbed to injuries sustained nine days earlier when he fell and struck his head at State Correctional Institute Graterford.

He was supervising inmates in the prison's outdoor recreation yard when he fell backwards and struck his head on a concrete wall, causing a skull fracture. Officer Weaver was the only officer assigned to the recreation yard at the time. Inmates who witnessed the incident stated that Officer Weaver was attempting to avoid a football that had been thrown in the yard.

Officer Weaver was transported to Paoli Hospital where he remained until succumbing to his injuries.

Officer Weaver was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections for 13 years. He is survived by his wife.

As a fellow Correctional Officer, I understand the stress of our day to day interactions with some of the most dangerous offenders in the state. Over the years, we build up the tenacity to push through and get our jobs no matter how difficult things get. Prayers go out to the family of officer David Weaver, on behalf of us all who step foot in institutions throughout the commonwealth not knowing what outcomes we will face in the course of our day. God Bless!!!
