Special Officer Travis Greer was shot and killed in the Southern Railroad's New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad Shop in Meridian, Mississippi.

Officer Greer was patrolling the facility when he encountered a man stealing coal from one of the coal chutes. As Officer Greer called out to the man to stop the subject suddenly opened fire without warning, striking him the stomach.

The man was arrested by a city police officer. As he was being taken to jail a mob of citizens forcibly removed him from the patrol wagon and lynched him by shooting him to death.
