Public Safety Officer Michael Ventura was killed when his patrol car crashed on State Highway 50, approximately 1/2 mile from County Highway B.

He was traveling with this emergency equipment activated when his patrol car left the roadway and entered a ditch, causing him to be ejected from the vehicle. He was flown to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee where he succumbed to his injuries.

Officer Ventura had served with the Salem Department of Public Safety for two months and had previously served as a corrections officer for several years.

"Thank you all for your kindness, compassion, and support during this very difficult time. Being a public safety officer meant the world to my husband, and not only do I appreciate everything he did at his job on a daily basis but I appreciate and thank all law enforcement officers for their selflessness and sacrafices they make everyday. It is clear to me that law enforcement is a calling. I am proud to be a part of this second family, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your thoughts and prayers. With sincere thanks."

I have posted this reflection by Maggie Ventura in response to the overwheilming well wishes by normal everyday citizens and the various law enforcement agencies through out this great nation.

As Chief of this small law enforcement agency I can not begin to repay those individuals that stepped up at the call for help and so unselfishly rolled up their sleeves and took care of Mrs. Ventura, the immediate family, and our agency.

With well over 300 law enforcement agencies sending cards of condolences to our agency and the family.....I want you all to know that each one was opened, read carefully and shared with family and friends of Michael. This seemed the only appropriate way to communicate to all of you that we are very grateful to all that have taken the time to communicate their thoughts to the family and law enforcement agency that Michael Ventura so proudly represented.
