Trooper Thomas Clardy died from injuries he sustained in a vehicle collision on I-90, near mile marker 80 in Charlton, at approximately 12:00 pm.

He was working an overtime assignment conducting accident reduction enforcement when he made a traffic stop of another vehicle. He had returned to his patrol car when another vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed crossed three travel lanes and struck him from behind.

Trooper Clardy was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. The driver of the vehicle who struck the patrol car was charged criminally with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation.

Trooper Clardy had served with the Massachusetts State Police for 10 years and was a veteran of both the United States Marine Corps and United States Army. He is survived by his wife and six children.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Thomas was killed.

To the Clardy family, fellow troopers, and all who call Thomas beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

I also thank Thomas for his service to our country in the Corps. He was my son's brother in green as well as blue and I bid him Semper Fi.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Trooper Clardy gave to his community and the citizens of Massachusetts, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 16, 2016.
