Deputy Broadwell was shot and killed when he and another deputy went to a home to search for a suspect. The home's owner opened fire on the deputies with a shotgun, killing Deputy Broadwell. The suspect was arrested and taken out of the county by the Virginia State Police to protect him from an angry mob of citizens.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 58th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
