Turnkey Patrick Fogarty died after being beaten by three inmates who were escaping from the county jail.

He was transported to a local hospital where he suffered a fatal heart attack. All three inmates were apprehended and charged in connection with the escape and Turnkey Fogarty's death.

Turnkey Fogarty had served with the Lewis County Sheriff's Office for 17 years. He was survived by his wife.

Officer Fogarty,
On today, the 58th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of Lewis County. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. There is no tougher job in Law Enforcement than that of a Corrections/Detention Officer.
