Deputy Sheriff Thomas Hall and Special Deputy Sheriff A.L. Smithers were shot and killed as they attempted to arrest an escapee from the county jail.

The suspect was apprehended and hanged on April 25, 1913.

Deputy Hall was survived by his wife and five children.
