Deputy Sheriff Harry Smith was shot and killed and a constable was shot and seriously wounded as they attempted to arrest two men on warrants for assault and battery at their home near Paoli.

Both suspects were apprehended the next day near Rego. They were subsequently convicted of Deputy Smith's murder and sentenced to life. One was released from prison in 1915. The other subject was paroled in July of 1922.

Deputy Sheriff Smith,
On today, the 110th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of Orange County. It angers me that your murderers served so little time-hopefully now they're paying for it.
