Police Officers Shawn Smiley and Richard Halford were killed in a helicopter crash while assisting in the search for a missing 9-year-old boy at approximately 10:30 pm.

They were flying low over an area approximately four miles west of downtown when the Hughes OH-6A helicopter suddenly crashed to the ground near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Hamilton E. Holmes Drive. The helicopter exploded after impacting the ground. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the NTSB and FAA.

The boy they were searching for was found safe a short time later.

Officer Smiley was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served with the Atlanta Police Department for two years and had been assigned as a tactical flight officer in the Air Unit for one year. He is survived by his wife and three children.

I did not get the opportunity to meet Officer Smiley personally but I am from the community where the accident occurred and will never forget that night. I was only minutes away from passing through the intersection before the crash. The lights on our street went black. We were devastated to learn there were fatalities involving officers serving our community, particularly officers who were searching for a little boy to bring him to safety. Signs of that night still remain as each time I pass the site I see teddy bears and other memorial items reminding us of the tragedy. As founder of a program that gives annually to first responders in remembrance of September 11th for our community I am sincerely grateful to those who put their lives at risk each day to serve us. You are a hero. Thank you for your courage. My prayers, thoughts and love go out to your family. R.I.P Officer Smiley. We will never forget your service in SW Atlanta.
