Deputy Sheriff William Mast was shot and killed as he responded to a 911 call with an open line at a trailer home on Hardin Road in Deep Gap, North Carolina, at approximately 1:00 am.

Upon arriving at the scene he began walking towards the house when he was shot in the face. It is believed the subject who shot him intentionally ambushed him. Another deputy with him returned fire killing the suspect.

Deputy Mast had served with the Watauga County Sheriff's Office for three years. He is survived by his expectant wife, parents, and sibling.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation named the bridge over the New River on US 421, near Boone, in honor of Deputy Mast.

I didn't know you but I do know of your sacrifice. Thank you for bravely and unselfishly serving. Although your physical presence is not here you live on fully and mightily through the witness you left behind, your story. What a precious testament of what God done and is Still doing through your life! God takes a life, a portrait of doom snd despair, changes it, painting it beautiful. That masterful artist breathes life into His work even now, reaching others. Your work here on earth is not done, you serve now in the highest of all callings, increasing Gods kingdom, reaching the unreached through your story! I pray your family finds comfort in knowing how powerful your work in Christ is still alive today, no less than before God called you home in His presence.
