Constable Walter Brode was shot and killed while attempting to break up a disturbance at a community celebration in Sunny Side.

Two men began to fight at the event and as Constable Brode attempted to intervene he was shot once in the chest and killed. A bystander then fatally shot the suspect as the man tried to flee the area.

Constable Brode had served as constable in the community for only two months and had previously served with the Waller County Sheriff's Office for several years. He was survived by his wife and three children.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. I am privileged to be among the first to pay tribute to you. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 78th anniversary year of your death.

Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Rest In Peace.
