Deputy Sheriff Dewayne Hester was killed in a vehicle collision while responding to an assault in-progress call near Elizabethtown.

He was traveling on NC 87, near Allen Priest Road, when his car left the roadway on a curve and struck a tree.

Deputy Hester had served with the Bladen County Sheriff's Office for one year and had previously served with the Elizabethtown Police Department for four years. He is survived by his two children.

Worked 1530-2330 shift recently at Patrol and thought a few nights how nice it would be to get off and sit on the steps of the jail and talk about our families like we used to do. Then the next week Neil and I passed your accident scene and I my eyes watered. I told Neil how much I had been missing you lately. I said a prayer for continued comfort for your family. There is no doubt in my mind that you are forever looking down on us and that makes the missing you a little easier. Keep us safe my brother.
