Chief Deputy Meister was shot and killed during a drug sting operation. He and another deputy were ambushed by three suspects at the scene in Lytle, Texas. Chief Deputy Meister was shot twice by one of the suspects, armed with a .22 caliber rifle. The other deputy was able to return fire, killing two of the suspects. The third suspect was taken into custody after trying to flee the area.

Chief Deputy Meister was survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 21rst anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
