Officer Kevin Wilkins was accidentally shot and killed as he attempted to install a rubber grip on his service pistol.

He had removed the magazine from his service pistol but neglected to remove the round from the chamber. As he installed the grip the weapon discharged and he was struck in the face.

Nearby officers immediately called for assistance and provided aid, but Officer Wilkins succumbed to the wound approximately 15 minutes later.

Officer Wilkins had served with the Atlantic City Police Department for two years. He is survived by his father, three siblings, and fiancee.

Im am honored to inform the family of Officer Kevin B. Wilkins, that I will riding in the 2011 Law Enforcement United "Road to Hope" in memory of Kevin. This is a 250 mile bicycle ride from Chesapeake, Va to Washington D.C. We ride in memory of fallen police officers that made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Each rider is assigned one of these officers and will be wearing a bracelet with his or her name inscribed on it along the ride. We will be also flying a flag off of our bike with the name and picture of the officer we are riding for. We will begin our journey on Mey 10th and will be arriving at the Pentagon on May 12th. If any of the family will be in Washington D.C. during police week, I would like to meet with you in person to give you the bracelet and flag.

Once again it is my honor to be riding in Kevin's memory, and he will be in my thoughts during the entire ride.
