Marshal Robert Garrett was shot and killed in an act of revenge from an incident that occurred in eight months earlier. He and the county commissioner had advised a property owner that a portion of their land would be acquired through eminent domain to erect a bridge.

On October 16, 1909, the property owner fatally shot Marshal Garrett as a result of the action.

Marshal Garrett was survived by his wife.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 101rst anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Your sacrifice was made so many years ago. Evil was, is, and will be a part of life just as goodness such as yours will also be present.

Rest In Peace
