Police Chief John Harter was shot and killed by a mentally deranged man as he stood on the loading dock at the train depot in nearby Lena.
A witness stated that the suspect walked up to Chief Harter and asked him where was his gun. When Chief Harter replied that he did not know what he was talking about, the suspect produced a revolver and shot him five times. The suspect, who was arrested minutes later and confined in the Hampton County Jail, refused to make a statement.
Chief Harter was survived by his wife and several children. He is buried in Harter Cemetery, Allendale County, South Carolina.
