Deputy Sheriff Edwards was shot and killed by a man he was attempting to arrest. The suspect was apprehended several days later.
The suspect was found guilty of first degree murder in Saluda County and sentenced to death. In March of 1923 he was awarded a new trial in Edgefield County where he was again convicted of first degree murder but was sentenced to life.
