Special Deputy Sheriff Allen Dean was shot and fatally wounded and Special Deputy Charles Watson was shot and killed in a gun battle with two moonshiners at the Kesselburg Bridge on the Notla River.

A third deputy was seriously wounded. The suspects, thought to have been shot and seriously wounded, escaped. Deputy Dean died two days later at a hospital in Polk County, Tennessee.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 88th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service to my home state and the birthplace of my son. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
