Sergeant John Griffin succumbed to injuries suffered when he slipped and fell on the front porch of the city hall.

Sergeant Griffin had gone to city hall to pickup his pay check prior to the start of his shift. As he opened the door he slipped and fell, fracturing his skull. He was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries four hours later.

Sergeant Griffin had served with the Venice Police Department for 18 years.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 52nd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
