Deputy Marshal Boehnlein was killed in an automobile accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, near Bedford, Pennsylvania, during a period of heavy fog. He and another deputy marshal were en route to a training course in Washington, DC, at the time of the accident. The other deputy marshal was injured in the accident.

Deputy Marshal Boehnlein had served with the Marshals Service for 18 months and served in the Southern District of Ohio. He had previously served as a patrolman with the Cincinnati Police Department, Ohio, for 11 years. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and four daughters.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Andrew. I am so humbled by your valor and courage.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Andrew gave to his community and the citizens of our country, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 26, 1971.
