George H. Loney

Deputy Sheriff George Loney was shot and killed in Okema by a 15 year-old boy as he searched his mother's shanty for stolen goods.

The boy and his mother were arrested and confined in the Okfuskee County Jail. Two weeks later a mob broke into the jail, gagged and bound the jailer, and seized them both. They were hanged from the timbers of a bridge across the Canadian River. It is believed a third accomplice was imprisoned.

Deputy Loney was survived by his wife and three children. He is buried west of Paden, Lincoln County, Oklahoma.
