Sheriff George Dunham was shot and killed by a man he attempted to arrest on a warrant for wife beating. As Sheriff Dunham walked up to the man's front door, the man shot him in the face with with a double-barreled shotgun.

The next day the suspect was shot and killed when he opened fire on members of a posse who had him cornered in a swamp.
