John Manier

Town Marshal John Manier was shot and killed by a man he attempted to arrest for disturbing the peace. As the suspect fled, a citizen who went to the marshal's aid, fired at him twice. When captured the next day, the suspect had bullet wounds in his hip and hand.

The suspect was found guilty of first degree murder and hanged June 2, 1905.

Pretoria is a small town near Albany.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the one hundred and seventh anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
