MP Gregory Mathews was struck and killed by a Federal Bureau of Prisons vehicle while assisting prison officials search for two escaped convicts. The prisoners had escaped from the Petersburg Federal Correctional Complex, which adjoins Ft. Lee, Virginia.

One of the suspects had been apprehended and was being returned to the prison. MP Mathews and a second MP were completing a perimeter check of the installation's ammunition dump on Reformatory Road when he was struck by the vehicle. The other MP was pushed out of the path of the vehicle by MP Mathews. MP Mathews was transported to the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, in Richmond, where he succumbed to his injuries.

MP Mathews was survived by his wife.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 38th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer. Mark, thank you for sharing a brother's devotion.

Time never dimishes respect, and your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for the solace of all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. I hold your family in my heart's embrace today.

Rest In Peace
