Custody Officer McWilliams was struck by an inmate four times with a hammer. He was taken to the institution's hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning.

The 21-year-old inmate attacked Officer McWilliams after he reported him for an infraction of rules, causing 21 days of good behavior time that was erased from his sentence to be added back. He had been serving a 14 year term for grand larceny since he was 16. He was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life.

Custody Officer McWilliams was survived by his wife, sister, three brothers and father.
