Deputy John Counts was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man on a warrant near Clintwood.

The suspect fled on foot and shot Deputy Counts as he pursued.

Deputy Counts had served with the agency for at least 3 years. He was survived by his wife, 10 children, parents, and nine siblings.

I was born March 9, 1957, John Bunyon Counts was killed in the line of duty March 22, 1922, my mother was 6 months old when her father died she never got to know him. I got to know him throught stories from my grandmother and mother. I'm proud my grandfather was finally honerd for his service.
