Sheriff Edward D. Emmons was dispatched to an accident on the Dallas Highway about six miles north of Waco. While walking across the highway with one of the drivers of the damaged vehicles, Deputy Sheriff Emmons was struck by a passing automobile and fatally injured. The other man was seriously injured. The driver was charged with negligent homicide.
Emmons had been a Waco police officers since 1928 and had joined the sheriff’s office just six months earlier. He was survived by his wife, Bettie, son, Edward, and his mother who lived in San Antonio. He was 42 years old. He was buried in the Rosemound Cemetery in Waco.
