Agent Michael Thomas was shot and killed by a suspect who
opened fire on him while he sat a traffic light at the
intersection of Peoria Street and Montview Boulevard.

Agent Thomas had just left a training session and was heading
to another session when the incident occurred.

The shooter was subdued by several passers-by and then
taken into custody by an Aurora police officer, and two Federal
Bureau of Prisons corrections officers who happened to be in
the area. The shooter was wanted in Denver for an
unprovoked shooting that had occurred the previous week.

The suspect was convicted of second degree murder and
sentenced to 80 years in prison on April 6, 2009.

Agent Thomas had served with the Aurora Police Department
for 24 years. He is survived by his daughter, mother, and

Mike, I miss you greatly. You were more than a brother-in-law to me, you were my brother and always will be. To this day, in honor of you, I thank each and every officer I come across, and if it is in a restaurant or coffee shop, I gratefully buy their meals and let them know how greatly they are appreciated. I know how important it is to recognize their courage and willingness to put themselves in harm's way, and the challenges their families face each and every day. I love you, bro. I know you are in the best and most honored of places.
