Sheriff Rattazzi was killed in an automobile accident while returning to Eureka after going to Palisade on business. The accident occurred one mile north of Eureka.

Sheriff Rattazzi had served as sheriff for 12 years. He was survived by his wife and two children.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
