Sheriff Benjamin Irey was struck and killed by a train while en route to serve a warrant.

He was struck as he crossed a set of tracks while switching trains.

Sheriff Irey had started his first term as sheriff on the previous day. He was survived by his wife and five children.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 125th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect, not even 124 years.
