Patrolman W. Edwin Miller drowned while pursuing an escaped prisoner.

At approximately 2200 hours, Patrolman Miller was pursuing a suspect that had escaped from the police station. The chase brought Patrolman Miller to the wharf where he pursued the suspect onto a tow boat which was docked on the Wolf River. During the chase, Patrolman Miller jumped to an adjacent boat, lost his footing, fell into the river, and drowned.

Patrolman Miller had served with the Memphis Police Department for 7 years, and was survived by his wife and two children.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 103rd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never dimishes respect, not even 103 years.
