Peter Edward Bergeron, Jr.

Patrolman Peter Bergeron was shot and killed when he and his partner surprised several suspects attempting to break into a car at the corner of Nelson and Hollygrove.

The men fled, and Patrolman Bergeron chased one of them into an alley. The suspect opened fire, striking him in the chest. A detective arriving on the scene shot and killed the 17-year-old shooter. Four others were arrested.

Patrolman Bergeron died while being transported to Charity Hospital.

Patrolman Bergeron had served with the New Orleans Police Department. He was survived by his wife and son.

He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Valor.
