Officer Teresia Wheeler suffered a fatal heart attack while participating in a required run at the Alabama Corrections Academy.

She collapsed while attempting to complete the 1.5 mile run. She was transported to a local hospital where she died.

Officer Wheeler had served with the Alabama Department of Corrections for only 2 months.

I was in the 02 class at the academy that next year after your death. We heard about your death by other officers and were saddened. Nobody wanted to talk about it much; but, it etched in my mind always. It made us appreciate life. It made us become more professional about our job because of you. Your life should always be remembered. My you gain understanding of this life while with the divinities and the Creator in the heavens. May you speak to other women to be strong and courageous in their endeavors to be law women. Thank you for your service.
