I had the honor and pleasure of serving with Pvt. Joe Murphy in January and February 1956 at the Quartermaster School in Ft. Lee, Virginia. On at least 2 or 3 Saturday afternoons we, along with one or two other soldiers, went into Petersburg and Richmond just for R & R. On Sundays, however, we could always count on finding Joe at the Chapel. His Christian ethics followed him wherever he went.

It was once reported back to me by another soldier that a particular Sargent made mention to Joe of his importance of relationship to his brother Auidie. Joe reportedly calmly replied to the effect, "You leave my brother out of this. I will make my own reputation."

I shall always remember Joe as a man without any vises and most humble and pleasant person to be around.

While that was nearly 60 years ago I still miss Joe, and I am sure countless others do as well.

See you a little later, my friend.
