Officer Boyle succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained two days earlier after stopping a stolen car. The suspect was found after falling through a skylight into an apartment after setting himself on fire. The man was sentenced to death, but the sentence was vacated in 2015 when he was ordered to serve live without possibility of parole.

Officer Boyle had served with the agency for seven months since graduating from academy. He was survived by his mother, father, stepmother, and two sisters. His father also served as a detective with the Philadelphia Police Department.

Officer Boyle, I met your mother and a sister at a rally supporting the PPD earlier today. I was so touched because of the impact her reading about you had on me, and also your young age. You were just starting to live your dream when your life was so cruelly taken.

Thank-you for your sacrifice. You will never be forgotten.
