Deputy Stewart was shot and killed while trying to calm a group of drunken soldiers who had come into town. The soldier who shot Deputy Stewart was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Deputy Stewart had served with the Spokane County Sheriff's Department for approximately 1 year.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 142nd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
