Patrolman Kirkegard was struck by an automobile and severely injured while guarding gasoline supply trucks during a drivers strike. Patrolman Kirkegard was removed to Post Graduate Hospital where he died the next month.

Patrolman Kirkegard was a WWI veteran of the 77th Division in France. He was survived by his wife and four children. He was assigned to Motorcycle Unit 1, the present day Highway 1.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 82nd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
