Night Watchman Gerrior and Night Supervisor were beaten to death at the State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, by six escaping inmates. Watchman Gerrior was making his rounds when he encountered one of the inmates trying to scale a cell wall. The inmate attacked him and strangled him to death. The inmate then took Watchman Gerrior's keys and freed five other inmates.
As the group fled they were confronted by Supervisor Amlaw. Several of the inmates attacked him and beat him to death with an iron leg from a cell cot. The inmates also attacked and injured three more guards. All of the inmates were eventually apprehended.
Watchman Gerrior was survived by his wife, daughter, and three sons.
