PFC Ezernack and Patrolman Jeremy Carruth were shot and killed while attempting to arrest a suspect during an SRT operation near Overton and Warshauer Streets.

The suspect was wanted for ambushing an officer the previous day in which he fired several shots from an automatic weapon into the officer's patrol car. The suspect opened fire as the SRT officers attempted to arrest him, fatally wounding Patrolman Carruth and PFC Ezernack and wounding three other officers. The suspect was also killed in the return gunfire.

PFC Ezernack had been a member of the Alexandria Police Department for almost four years.

My Darling David:
Mother's Day approaches and my heart wishes you were here to be part of the celebration. The menu calls for boiled crawfish (your favorite) and of course swimming all afternoon. I can still see you and Dad stirring the pot of crawfish and putting your magic touch on everything. What fun we always had with the whole family.
Time flies so quickly but the longing for your presence here on earth is never diminished. Someday though, we'll all be together and once more the circle will be complete. Miss you tremendously and ask that you watch over our family, your friends and fellow officers. Until we meet again, sweet angel, know how much I love and miss you.
