Special Officer Schimunck was accidentally shot and killed in New York City, New York, with his own weapon while he was inspecting the under carriage of a truck at approximately 1230 hours. The incident occurred on Pier 8 on the North River near Rector Street in Manhattan. His revolver discharged as he bent over, fatally wounding him.

The Lehigh Valley Railroad was merged into Conrail on April 1, 1976, which was later merged into Norfolk Southern Railroad on August 22, 1998.

Special Officer Schimunck was survived by his wife.
