Deputy Samuel Smith suffered a fatal heart attack following a struggle with a drunk driving suspect.

When Deputy Smith and another deputy were making the arrest, Deputy Smith complained of being short of breath. As Deputy Smith and the other deputy began to drive back to the jail in separate patrol cars, Deputy Smith's vehicle left the roadway. The other deputy turned around, called for assistance, and began life saving efforts. Deputy Smith was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Deputy Smith had been employed with the Crawford County Sheriff's Department for 11 years.

Sam worked with my Dad, Capt. Leon "Red" Brown. He was one of his best friends and such a wonderful guy!! Sam loved taking care of those in our county and was a fantastic K9 officer! I grew up knowing him and remember the day my mom called to tell me he had the heart attack. It was such a sad day for all who knew Sam, especially those who loved him and served with him. He will always be remembered and missed! I know he's up there looking down over us, smiling and playing with Lux, his first K9 Partner who went 10-7 before Sam. We love you Sam!!
