Lieutenant Carroll was shot and killed after being severely beaten by a theft suspect. During the arrest the man attacked Lieutenant Carroll and beat him, slashed him with a knife, and fracture his skull. The suspect then shot Lieutenant Carroll in the neck before fleeing. Lieutenant Carroll succumbed to his wounds the following day.

A posse of officers along with Lieutenant Carroll's brother trapped the suspect in a house near Eastpoint a few hours after the incident. Lieutenant Carroll's brother, the first one to enter the house, shot and killed the suspect when he attempted to attack him with a chair.
