Roundsman Gallagher succumbed to wounds received two weeks earlier when he was struck on the head by a rock. He had arrested a man for disorderly conduct and was walking him to the station house when he was attacked by an angry mob on 88th Street. A person in the mob threw a stone which struck Roundsman Gallgher in the head.

Roundsman Gallgher was assigned to the 23rd Precinct, the present day 20th Precinct.

We can never be sure how our lives will end. I think most of us have at one time or another found ourselves having objects thrown at us. More often than not, we're missed or only receive minor injuries. We tend to laugh it off and simply treat it as a good war story. Sadly, you are proof that sometimes, the blow can be far more serious, even fatal.

I can only hope and pray that your descendants have kept your memory alive as well as this site has. You are NOT forgotten and you are respected.

God Bless you, Brother and may the rest you have forever be peaceful.
