Sheriff White was shot at the Louis Nickel's Beer Parlor four miles west of Edna, Tx while attempting to arrest the establishment's owner for fighting. The suspect, who had previously been sentenced to two years in prison on cattle rustling charges by the sheriff, shot Sheriff White with a shotgun.

Sheriff White attempted to reach his car but collapsed before he could make it. A citizen attempted to assist Sheriff White to the hospital but was threatened by the suspect who proceeded to shoot Sheriff White several more times, killing him. The suspect then shot himself and later died.

Sheriff White had been with the agency for 16 years. He was survived by his wife, two brothers and three sisters.
