Officer Winston was accidentally shot and killed when her partner's shotgun discharged as the partner struggled with a suspect. Officer Winston was approaching the two to assist the other officer when the shotgun was fired. The blast struck her directly below her bulletproof vest. She died of her wounds a short time later.

Officer Winston had been with the agency for 4 years and was survived by her husband and three children.

I did not know Shirley, but I graduated from the same high school as she did. I learned about her through planning our first Chavala High All Class Reunion. I asked for a list of Fallen Wildcats, so that we could remember them in a memorial. Her maiden name is Blanding and I was told she passed away in the line of duty and that the Shirley B. Winston Supercenter is named after her in the city of Columbus which is where I live. Now, I am all excited about doing our next picnic there to honor her sacrifice. I am doing all I can to make sure the Wildcats know how special she was to our community.
