Deputy William Harless died of a gunshot wound received the previous day while attempting to serve a burglary arrest warrant. The suspect fired a Winchester Rifle through the front window of the house, striking Deputy Harless in the neck.

Deputy Harless had been with the agency for two years. He also held a dual role as a deputy sheriff for the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

It is with pride that I remind your survivors that you will be remembered in a special balloon release on Police Memorial Day this year....My son was also 25 years old and serving as a deputy constable when he was shot and killed...just 83 years after you. God bless all of your family!
