Officer Barton was shot and killed while standing on a porch while serving a traffic warrant in Miami. A suspect unrelated to the traffic warrant opened fire with a shotgun, without provocation, from the house across the street, striking Officer Barton. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was apprehended after several Miami officers responded to the scene.
Officer Barton had been with the agency for 11 years and was survived by his wife and daughter.
