Officer James Cucia was shot and killed while he was attempting to arrest four suspects who were posing as federal agents selling Liberty Bonds. The suspects were also in the process of robbing a local rooming house when the shooting took place. Officer Cucia was able to return fire killing one of the suspects.
The other three suspects caught a train to Youngstown, Ohio, where they shot it out with police who cornered them in an alley. One suspect was killed. The other two escaped.
Officer Cucia was survived his wife and two children.
