Officer Hicks was shot and killed while off duty after being recognized as a police officer. Officer Hicks had attended a party at a friend's house. A partygoer recognized him as an officer who had almost arrested her for a domestic violence charge several weeks earlier. The woman's boyfriend then started arguing with Officer Hicks, pulled out a handgun, and shot him. Officer Hicks was armed but did not fire his weapon. The two suspects were arrested later in the day.

Officer Hicks' killer was found guilty of reckless homicide and sentenced to 42 months in prison.

Officer Hicks had been employed with the Memphis Police Department for three years.

My condolences to his family, friends, and fellow officers. I am rather outraged right now that Officer Hicks' killer only received 42mos. If I read the info correctly, this officer was taken away from his friends and relatives 12yrs ago. Simple math would show that the perp has been REUNITED with his for no less than 8yrs now. I sure hope the judge that gave such a light sentence did not stay on the bench long. The summary indicates that even though he was off duty, he was killed because he was a LEO. That deserved alot longer than 42mos.
