Trooper Ross was killed when his patrol car was struck by a commercial vehicle while he was working a construction work-zone detail.

Trooper Ross' vehicle was positioned at the rear of the work-zone with its emergency lights flashing when a tractor-trailer struck it from behind. The patrol car immediately flipped over and was engulfed in flames with Trooper Ross inside. The tractor-trailer then crossed the median and struck another vehicle.

In 2002, the driver pled guilty to vehicular homicide and aggravated assault.
Trooper Ross had been employed with the Tennessee Highway Patrol for almost five years, and is survived by his three children, parents, and sister.

I think of you often especially when going by the sign bearing your name driving down part of I-40 dedicated to you near Jackson. I remember all those hot days we spent at pee wee football practice and games when you were my coach. I remember that day when my dad came home and told me what happened. Thank you for your sacrifice and i still laugh to myself from time to time thinking of you getting onto me with that chin stuck way out and being all dramatic! I do my best to, no matter what, always make it home to my soulmate and little girl. Your situation is heartbreaking but a sobering reminder that in our field theres always a chance that you can do everything perfect and still not make it home. You are missed but not forgotten.
